डब्ल्यूएचओ के कार्यकारी बोर्ड में वर्तमान में 34 सदस्य हैं. भारत के नामित को नियुक्त करने के प्रस्ताव को 19 मई 2020 को 194 देशों के विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन की बैठक में पारित किया गया था.

केंद्रीय स्वास्थ्य मंत्री डॉ. हर्षवर्धन को विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन (डब्ल्यूएचओ) के अगले कार्यकारी बोर्ड के अध्यक्ष के रूप में नियुक्त किया गया है. डब्लूएचओ के अनुसार, भारत में कोरोना से लड़ाई में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा रहे हर्षवर्धन अपना कार्यभार 22 मई को संभालेंगे. वे जापान के डॉक्टर हिरोकी नकाटनी के स्थान पर बोर्ड के अध्यक्ष नियुक्त किए गए हैं.

डब्ल्यूएचओ के कार्यकारी बोर्ड में वर्तमान में 34 सदस्य हैं. भारत के नामित को नियुक्त करने के प्रस्ताव को 19 मई 2020 को 194 देशों के विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन की बैठक में पारित किया गया था. इसमें सर्वसम्मति से यह भी तय हुआ था कि भारत मई से शुरू हो रहे तीन साल के कार्यकाल के दौरान कार्यकारी बोर्ड में होगा. वे भारत में कोरोना वायरस के खिलाफ अभियान में केंद्रीय भूमिका निभा रहे हैं.

चुने जाने का नियम क्या है?

विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन के एक्जीक्यूटिव बोर्ड के चेयरमैन का पद कई देशों के अलग-अलग ग्रुप में एक-एक साल के हिसाब से दिया जाता है. पिछले साल तय किया गया था कि 22 मई 2020 से शुरू होने वाले पहले वर्ष के लिए भारत का उम्मीदवार कार्यकारी बोर्ड का अध्यक्ष होगा.

भारत के अतिरिक्त बोर्ड के सदस्यों के रूप में बोट्सवाना, कोलंबिया, घाना, गिनी-बिसाऊ, मेडागास्कर, ओमान, रिपब्लिक ऑफ कोरिया, रूस और ब्रिटेन को जगह मिली है.

गले से जुड़ी बीमारियों के विशेषज्ञ

डॉ. हर्षवर्धन खुद एक डॉक्टर हैं और ईएनटी यानी कान, नाक और गले से जुड़ी बीमारियों के विशेषज्ञ हैं. भारत में कोरोना वायरस के खिलाफ अभियान में वे केंद्रीय भूमिका निभा रहे हैं. हालांकि डब्ल्यूएचओ के बोर्ड की जिम्मेदारी पूर्णकालिक नहीं है तथा हर्षवर्धन को केवल इसकी बैठकों में हिस्सा लेने के लिए जाना होगा.
